Fun Facts – 20 Years of Growth on Queensland Roads

Looking back 20 years on Queensland roads is an interesting journey. Your car CD player was probably blasting out popular hits from the late 90s like Barbie Girl, Mmmbop or Tubthumping. A lot has changed since the 1990s. The music has changed, Hanson has grown up and while Queensland roads are becoming busier they are becoming safer.
•There are over one million more cars registered in Queensland now than there was 20 years ago.[1]
•There are almost three times as many motorcycles on the road in Queensland as there was 20 years ago.[2]
•You can now choose between four insurers for Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP Insurance) in Queensland but back 20 years ago you had a choice between 11 CTP insurers.[3]
•Annual CTP insurance premiums for cars (forming part of your annual registration fee) have gone up around $120 since 1997.[4]
•Despite the increase in the number of cars on Queensland roads, the number of accidents happening on Queensland roads has not spiked considerably.[5]
•Queensland roads are becoming safer despite being busier. The Queensland road toll in 1998 was 279. The road toll in 2015 was 243 and overall there is a downward trend in road fatalities since records dating back to 1952.[6]
•Women between the ages of 16 to 35 are still the most likely to be injured in an accident that results in a compensation claim.[7]
