Eligibility period

A full-time registered nurse working for the same aged care provider for at least 12 months will qualify for two separate $3,700 bonuses in 2022 and 2023. Applications for the bonus payment will be made through aged care providers. Eligible employers must submit an application form and grant funding agreement to the Department of Health before the end of May in order to receive funds. The Department will assess the applications, and if the bonuses are awarded, the funds will be distributed to the providers.

The Aged Care Services Minister Richard Colbeck says the program is a recognition of the "extraordinary" work that aged-care nurses do. He says it will help to "ensure they are paid appropriately."

The Australian Government has commissioned a study of the workforce needs of the aged care sector. Unfortunately, after completing the research in 2021, the Morrison Government did not release the report. It is hoped that the new government will act to address this critical workforce shortfall.

A recent survey of providers in the aged care sector reveals that 60 percent of them are operating at a loss. This has contributed to an increased turnover of aged care employees and staff. Additionally, there are reports of increased injury rates in the sector.

As a result, it is clear that the sector needs to make changes to attract a skilled workforce. These changes can include financial incentives to help providers with their workforce recruitment and retention. However, to be effective, these changes must involve all stakeholders.
