Inexpensive Date #6: Give yourself an historic tour. Research some historical information about local areas and then go visit them to see for yourself.

OMordecai Historic Park (One Mimosa St.). Tour an antebellum estate and catch a unique glimpse into what life was like at one of Wake County's largest plantations. In addition to the original structures, other historic buildings have been moved to the park for preservation. Some of them include the birthplace of President Andrew Johnson, the Badger-Iredell Law Office, and St. Mark's Chapel. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and youths ages 7-17. Children ages 6 and younger are free. Mordecai Historic Park also offers access to one-hour guided trolley tours of downtown Raleigh from March through December. Admission for the trolley tours is $8 for adults, $4 for youths ages 7-17. Children 6 and younger are free.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Peru and the people who live there and took care of us. What an extremely welcoming and gracious people. We were able to visit a home in Cuzco and a farm near Puno, and visit two different island cultures on Lake Titicaca. In Lima we also were able to a show of the diverse cultural dances of Peru. It was also a lot of fun to visit with the people in the market places.

Because tour guide groups are controlled, areas open up for view that are typically closed to the general public. I once took a tour group to Gettysburg and we had a tour guide along. He pointed out things and told the story of areas that were amazing. It truly brought the experience to life. We weren't just looking at signs and fields anymore.

When to go. High season on Maui is mid-December through mid-April. You may be surprised to learn, then, that that's not necessarily when Maui has its best weather. Storms with heavy rains lasting one to three days occur mainly in the winter. The rest of the year, the weather is warmer but not overly hot. You'll actually find the best prices and perfect beach weather in the fall and late spring.
